Sarnia, On – General Manager Jacques Beaulieu announced this afternoon the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club has acquired 19-year old forward Ryan Spooner from the Kingston Frontenacs.
The Sting has sent Ryan Kujawinski to the Frontenacs in exchange for Spooner.
Spooner a 2nd round pick of the Boston Bruins was actually an invite to Team Canada’s Selection Camp this past December but could not participate when diagnosed with mononucleosis. He has since been cleared by doctors to resume playing.
Beaulieu explains his thoughts on the transaction.
“Ryan Spooner is one of the elite players in all of junior hockey. In order to acquire him we had to pay a very high price. It’s a difficult decision to trade a 16-year old first round pick but at the end of the day this sends a very clear message as to what our goal as an organization is. We feel that Spooner is another piece to the puzzle that will help us contend for an OHL Championship this season.”
Spooner is expected to join the team in Erie and make his Sting debut Friday night versus the Otters.
